I started UselessLogic in 2003 with a clearly defined goal in mind. Originally, it was to be the home of a band a friend of mine and I were going to start… then a web comic we were going to start… and then it didn’t really go anywhere. I took full ownership of it, and it still hasn’t really gone anywhere. But that’s OK. With a name like UselessLogic is a clearly defined goal even necessary?
So for the last few years this became my vanity page, and nothing more. It’s where I hang my hat on the web. My cool Irish wool cap to be exact – that you may see if I ever get around to posting pictures. So until then, here’s a little bit about me:
My name is Adam D. Ross and I like to tell people the D stands for “Danger”. Not because I think I’m particularly dangerous, but more or less because it’s funny in a very nerdy way. That sums me up pretty well. I’m 24 years old and I’ve lived in Iowa my entire life. I grew up literally in the middle of a corn field outside of a town of about 400 (that’s in people, not thousands of people). I love the community I grew up in, but I had bigger dreams in mind. After graduation, I moved slightly to the right on the map to Dubuque and went to Northeast Iowa Community College. I earned an associates degree in Network Administration, worked a terrible job at Wal-Mart for 3 years, and met the love of my life, a Ms. Brittany Quinn.
My dreams got bigger, and I enrolled in the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls (a bit more to the left on the map). I lived next door to the busiest bars in town and had to wash strangers’ vomit off my front porch more than once (once really is enough). In the meantime, I worked as a student technician for the college of education on campus, started a job at John Deere on their IT staff, and earned my bachelors of science degree in computer science. I also started homebrewing, designed an intelligent intrusion detection system for networks that can learn to anticipate and retaliate against attacks, and unofficially converted to Buddhism. College life is crazy.
I also lived next door to a hospital in the ghetto for a while with Brittany, which happened to be next door to regular shootings and a couple stabbings. I proposed to Brittany during this time, and she said yes.
After graduating college in December of aught eight, Brittany and I moved to the QC. That’s the Quad Cities for all you non-QCers. More specifically, we moved to Davenport, Iowa (one of the 4 quads). I got a job at the John Deere corporate computer center designing and administering web sites and applications and Brittany got a job at a sort of hospital/rehabilitation center for seniors. We live in an apartment with our two cats, Kealee and Steve, and I brew beer as often as I can in an apartment that should be too small for brewing. And, as of two weeks of writing this, Brittany and I are going to be married.
